“The European Parliament has always recognized the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Azerbaijan,” said the European Parliament rapporteur for Azerbaijan Norica Nicolai as she met with Chairman of the State Committee for Refugee and IDP Affaırs Rovshan Rzayev. Nicolai expressed her regret with the fact that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict has not been settled for many years, underlining a revival in the European Parliament relating to this issue. “The European Parliament has always recognized the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Azerbaijan. I think that through joint efforts it is possible to achieve a positive solution to the conflict. Special attention is paid to addressing the problems of refugees and internally displaced persons in Azerbaijan. However, there is another factor as important for humans as food and water, that is their native land. For these people, the native home, the homeland is Nagorno-Karabakh. Unfortunately, the world community does not pay necessary attention to this issue," she said. Chairman of the Committee Rovshan Rzayev highlighted the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. He spoke of what has been done in order to address the problems of Azerbaijani refugees and internally displaced persons. Rovshan Rzayev hailed Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s and First Vice-President Mehriban Aliyeva’s attention to this layer of population, saying important projects are being implemented to improve the living conditions of internally displaced persons. Saying Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis attaches great importance to cooperation with the European Parliament, Rovshan Rzayev said it is necessary that the European Parliament and the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly take a resolute standing towards the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. They also discussed the recent ongoing political processes in Armenia, and other issues of mutual interest. Following the meeting, the European Parliament rapporteur for Azerbaijan Norica Nicolai accompanied by deputy chairmen of the State Committee for Refugee and IDP Affairs visited Masazir settlement of Absheron district to view conditions created for the internally displaced persons here.
