The State Committee for Affairs of Refugees and IDPs hosted a chess tournament to commemorate 100th anniversary of the National Leader Heydar Aliyev. 100 schoolchildren participated in the tournament that took place at the Republican Specialized School of the Olympic Reserve № 3 Children's and Youth Sports School in Baku with the support of the Azerbaijan Chess Federation.
During the opening ceremony of the tournament, it was emphasized that the National Leader Heydar Aliyev had prioritized the development of the younger generation, their spiritual, physical, and mental well-being and education. Recognizing chess as a distinctive sport that nurtures broad intelligence, logical thinking, and a positive mindset, he made significant contributions to the promotion of chess in the country. The National Leader played a pivotal role in establishing and enriching the chess traditions in Azerbaijan.
These traditions paved the way for the emergence of numerous accomplished chess players in the country. In formerly occupied regions, the chess schools were developing due to unwavering care provided. During the ceremony, it was noted that the revival of chess schools in newly constructed residential areas, as part of the Great Return program under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, will empower children and young individuals to actively participate in this sport.
The tournament commenced following the tribute paid to the memory of the National Leader and the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the liberation of our lands. Young chess players showcased their skills in blitz chess. Following seven rounds of gameplay, the top three winners among both boys and girls were determined. The winners got gifts and diplomas. All participants received certificates.
The event was attended by Nasimi Narimanov, advisor to the Chairman of the State Committee and Ibrahim Mirzayev, the Director of International Relations, Information, and Press Service Department.
