On May 17, Rovshan Rzayev, the Chairman of the State Committee for Refugees and IDPs, met with Gulam Ishaqzai, the UN Resident Coordinator in the Republic of Azerbaijan and Resident Representative of the Development Program. Speaking about the achievements of Azerbaijan, measures taken to address refugee and IDP problems in our country, Rovshan Rzayev said that Azerbaijan attaches particular importance to cooperation with international organizations. He stated that the President Ilham Aliyev is always focused on the solution of social problems of refugees and internally displaced persons. Consistent and purposeful measures are being taken in this direction at the initiative of the First Vice President of Azerbaijan Mehriban Aliyeva. Although there are more than one million refugees and internally displaced persons in Azerbaijan, our country`s economy is rapidly developing. It was noted that Azerbaijan, facing problems of refugees and IDPs since the first years of independence, had solved majority of problems of the people displaced from their homeland. When it comes to the solution of the problem of refugees and IDPs around the world, first of all, Azerbaijan is referred as an example. It was underlined by the heads of some influential international organizations repeatedly that Azerbaijan`s practice is an example for many countries around the world. Despite all this, there is still so much work to do in order to address the problems of IDPs. The Chairman of the State Committee spoke about the humanitarian and development projects carried out by the UN agencies related with our compatriots displaced from their homeland as a result of the conflict and thanked for their support. Highly appreciating the cooperation between the UN and the State Committee, Gulam Ishagzai expressed his confidence that the existing close and effective relations will continue to develop. Touching upon the issue about solution of the problem of refugees and IDPs by the state in Azerbaijan, he said that such example is rare in the world. Gulam Ishagzai said that the UN is ready to continue to cooperate for the welfare and security of the Azerbaijani people. Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, problems of refugees and IDPs, their living conditions, as well as prospects of further cooperation were discussed at the meeting.
