Tlakskoake-Khojaly square was brought into use in the capital of Mexico. A monument erected in the square in the memory of Khojaly tragedy victims.

The opening ceremony of Tlakskoake-Khojaly square and of the monument erected here in the memory of Khojaly tragedy victims was held in the territory of Historical Center region of Mexico on August 22. The delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ali Hasanov who was on an official visit in Mexico participated in the grand opening ceremony. Azerbaijani Ambassador to Mexico Ilgar Mukhtarov making a speech at the ceremony said that two years ago the project related to the repair and restoration works of Tlakskoake-Khojaly Square in Historical Center region of Mexico and to the erection of the monument dedicated to the Khojaly genocide , one of the most terrible tragedies of the history of Azerbaijan successfully completed. The diplomat emphasized that as well as, the historical church in the square belonging to the Middle Ages was repaired and the church bells was given as a gift to the temple. I. Mukhtarov giving detailed information about the atrocities committed by the Armenian vandals in Khojali noted that the issues of Khojali genocide and Military aggression of Armenia against Azerbaijan were discussed in the process of the internationally recognition of this genocide in 2011 and the relevant resolutions were adopted in Mexican Senate and the Chamber of Deputies. Deputy Prime Minister Ali Hasanov conveying greetings of the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and our nation to the participants of the ceremony noted that the people of Azerbaijan and Mexico shares historical way that they passed during the last two centuries, their struggle for gaining independence, the ancient customs and traditions, cultures and many other public values. And this, in its turn, creates a basis for the development of friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries. Ali Hasanov stated that our country was exposed to the military aggression of Armenia and as a result, 20 percent of Azerbaijani lands were occupied and one million Azerbaijanis became refugees and internally displaced persons. Ali Hasanov informing the participants of the ceremony about the genocide committed by Armenians emphasized that during tragedy hundreds people, as well as, old people, children and women were killed mercilessly. And it is a crime against humanity and it will never be receded from the memory of the Azerbaijani nation. Ali Hasanov noted that erection of this monument in Mexico - far from Azerbaijan, allocation of place in the historical center of Mexico is an obvious example that the Mexican people is fair, peaceful and democratic society. We express our gratitude to Mexico City government for this honor. Ali Hasanov, touching upon the discussion of the issues related to the Khojaly tragedy and the recognition of this crime as genocide by Chamber of Deputies in the last year in Mexican Congress, delivered a deep respect and esteem to the Members of the Mexican Congress that have demonstrated its democracy and devotion to the principles of justice. Then at the ceremony Marcelo Ebrard, Mayor of Mexico City making a speech noted that the location of Tlakskoake-Khojaly square in the territory of the Historical Center region of Mexico, and together with many other national and historical monuments and museums of international importance creates a basis that here will become lovely walking place for the residents and guests of the city in the future. Mayor Ebrard noted that it is for the first time that programmed musical and colorful fountain in the height of 20 meter was established in the city stating Tlakskoake-Khojaly square being wonderful recreational place of Mexico. After grand opening ceremony concert dedicated to the memory of the victims of Khojaly genocide was made by the Symphonic Orchestra of Mexico in Tlakskoake-Khojaly square.
