New projects and prospects were discussed between the Government of Azerbaijan and the World Bank

The Deputy Prime Minister of the Azerbaijan Republic, chair of the State Committee on Deals of Refugees and IDPs Ali Hasanov met with Asad Alam - former regional director of the World Bank for the South Caucasus and appointed to this position Henry Kerali, on June 19. 20-year co-operation between the Government of Azerbaijan and the World Bank was reviewed, new projects and prospects were discussed at the meeting. The Deputy Prime Minister Ali Hasanov highly appreciated the cooperation with the World Bank since 1992, brought to attention that sufficient experience was gained during the last period. Emphasizing the transparency of the World Bank’s activity, Ali Hasanov stated that namely this factor has led to our long-lived cooperation. Stating that the first tranche of “IDP Economic Development Support Project” signed between the Government of Azerbaijan and the World Bank was 10 million dollars and its period of implementation was 5 years, the Deputy Prime Minister mentioned the increase in amount, decrease in period of implementation in subsequent years, and attributed this to enriched experience. Ali Hasanov said, “The parties came to know each other better through each new agreement. Though financial resources of our government are growing, our cooperation with reliable and experienced international financial establishments on credit goes on. This is a result of both strengthening of cooperation and high confidence of the parties to each other”. He also brought to attention that there were good prospects and a lot of plans connected to the development of our country. The Deputy Prime Minister thanked Asad Alam - former regional director of the organization for the South Caucasus for its activities in development of relations between Azerbaijan and the World Bank. Asad Alam mentioned that he had learned much during his 3-year activity in Azerbaijan. He highly appreciated the support of the Government of Azerbaijan and the State Committee on Deals of Refugees and IDPs in realizing the World Bank programs. A.Alam emphasized that actions carried out by the Government of Azerbaijan for improving living conditions of refugees and IDPs were model for the world. It is no coincidence that Azerbaijan has been elected as a member of Executive Committee of the Office of UN High Commissioner for Refugees. Newly appointed regional director Henry Kerali promised not to deny efforts for development of this cooperation having strong supports. Other issues causing interest, as well as projects and measures, implementation of which is considered acceptable, were discussed at the meeting.
