The problem of Nagorno-Garabagh should be solved through negotiations and IDPs should return back to their homes.

On July 20, Deputy Prime Minister, the chairman of State Committee on the affairs of refugees and IDPs Ali Hasanov met with the members of the European People’s Party (EPP) at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. Ali Hasanov talked about the history of the Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorny Garabagh conflict, the measures taken to solve the refugees and IDPs’ social problems. He stated that 20 % of the Azerbaijan territory-Nagorny Garabagh, as well as 7 adjasent districts were occupied as a result of the Armenian military aggression against our country, more than 1 million of our compatriots became refugee and IDPs. In 1993 UN Security Council adopted the resolutions № 822, 853, 874, 884 on a peaceful settlement of this conflict, liberation of the occupied territories, taking refugees and IDPs back to their native lands. But Armenia doesn’t follow these resolutions. Ali Hasanov underlined the actions taken by Azerbaijani State to improve living conditions of IDPs and protect their rights and emphasized that 4,5 billion $ had been spent for the solution to refugees and IDPs’ problems over 20 years. 2,6 billion $ of this investment was budget allocation, 1 billion $ was allocation of the State Oil Fund, 900 million $ was allocation of international humanitarian organizations. 67 new settlements were built for refugees and IDPs, each condition was created for them, 100 thousand refugees and IDPs were moved to these settlements. The Deputy Prime Minister expressed his assuredness in returning of our refugee and IDPs back to their native lands.The chairman of the European People’s Party Luca Volonte accentuated that they were interested in living condition of refugees and IDPs living in Azerbaijan. He stated that the problem of Nagorno-Garabagh should be solved through negotiations and IDPs should return back to their homes. Other intriguing issues were discussed, the questions were answered, the disc on Nagorny Garabagh conflict were presented to the visitors at the meeting.
