Commemorative event was held on 21st anniversary of occupation of Aghdam district

On July 23, Commemorative event was held on 21st anniversary of occupation of Aghdam district. State and government officials, deputies of Milli Majlis (National Assembly), representatives of international organizations and intellectuals were present at the event. At the beginning, exhibition about the history of Aghdam, monuments of material culture, heroes, prominent intellectuals of the district, and the current situation in Aghdam was demonstrated at the foyer of Theatre of Young Spectators where the event was held. Then documentary named “Painful and proud memory or Aghdam of Azerbaijan” was demonstrated. Head of the Executive Power of Aghdam District Ragub Mammadov told about the history of the district, damages caused to Aghdam as a result of the occupation, courage of the people of Agdam. Speaking at the event, Deputy Prime Minister, the Chairman of the State Committee on Deals of Refugees and IDPs Ali Hasanov told about the problems arose due to the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, works done by our state in order to eliminate these problems. Ali Hasanov expressed his confidence that Nagorno Karabakh conflict will be resolved as a result of the efforts by the President Ilham Aliyev who introduced Azerbaijan to the world in the past 10 years, made our country one of the leading states. There is no doubt about it. Ali Hasanov said that national leader Heydar Aliyev has always paid a special attention and care to the people of Aghdam and mentioned that today this policy is being continued by the President Ilham Aliyev. President Ilham Aliyev visited Aghdam several times in the past 10 years. Namely, 18 of 82 settlements in the country were built in Aghdam. However, 77 % of the territory of Aghdam is under the occupation, more than 70 thousand people live in the district. During the event, Ali Hasanov touched on the issues regarding to the three internally displaced persons who were taken as hostages by Armenians recently. The Deputy Prime Minister reminded that these people did not violate the border as claimed by Armenians; they did not commit any crime, they went to visit the graves of their ancestors, loved ones. Those places are the territory of Azerbaijan. Unfortunately, Armenia acts contrary to the Geneva Convention. According to the terms of this Convention, if the civilians of the countries being at war, were taken as hostages, the same convention would be effective to protect these civilians. According to the requirements of the Convention, civilians should be allowed to meet with the International Committee of the Red Cross, as of the date they were taken as hostages. Unfortunately, Armenians have not done it. Ali Hasanov pointed out that the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has taken this issue under his control. Head of our state is interested in their fates every day. The government of Azerbaijan is engaged in this work.
