Mətbuat xidmətinin məlumatı 30 November, 2017
Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Chairman of the State Committee for Affairs of Refugees and IDPs Ali Hasanov met with a delegation led by the Operations Assistant (Deputy) of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, George William Okoth-Obbo on November 29. Talking about the cooperation between Azerbaijan and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Deputy Prime Minister Ali Hasanov said this organization always provided high-quality assistance to refugees and IDPs in our country. Recalling his visit to Geneva with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, Ali Hasanov noted that there was effective cooperation between the Government of Azerbaijan and UNHCR. At the meeting, the chairman of the committee gave detailed information about the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict to the visitors. He noted that over 25 years 20 percent of the Azerbaijani lands were occupied by the Armenian armed forces, as a result of more than one million Azerbaijanis have become refugees and IDPs. "This conflict has always been a number one problem in Azerbaijan and is still a major problem. Azerbaijan restored its independence 26 years ago. Almost all the other problems that existed in our country during the years of independence have been solved," said Ali Hasanov. Stating that it was his first time visit to Azerbaijan, George William Okoth-Obbo conveyed the greetings of the High Commissioner Filippo Grandi and said: "Filippo Grandi asked me to convey to you that the UNHCR takes Azerbaijan’s side and supports your country". George William Okoth-Obbo highlighted that the works done to improve the living conditions of refugees and IDPs in Azerbaijan are highly appreciated. He noted that the Government of Azerbaijan has assumed the leadership role to eliminate the problem of refugees and IDPs in the country. The opening of the 97th settlement in Tartar is a clear indication of this. He said that the purpose of his visits is to support Azerbaijan in this humanitarian issue.
