Deputy Prime Minister, Chairman of the State Committee for Refugees and IDPs, chairman of the Republican Commission on International Humanitarian Aid Mr. Ali Hasanov met with the head of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Furio de Angelis on September 27. During the meeting discussion was conducted on the participation of Azerbaijani delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Ali Hasanov in the next 67th session of Executive Committee of the High Commissioner's Programme to be held in Geneva on October 3-7, 2016 based on the invitation of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi and other issues on the visit.
Furio De Angelis expressed his impressions on the results of their visit to Barda, Tartar, Aghdam, Fuzuli, Aghjabadi regions together with the UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Ghulam Isakzai in order to get acquainted with the situation of IDPs, as well as to obtain information on social and economic welfare of IDPs on August 31 - September 2. He stated that during the visit program they have watched the newly constructed residential complexes for IDPs, as well as have reviewed the projects implemented by the Social Development Fund for IDPs. Pointing out that one of the main objectives of the visit is to inform the world about this problem, Furio de Angelis also said that they have been to Hasangaya, Shikharkh, Chayli villages of Tartar region, have met with local residents here and have provided the appropriate financial assistance to them. He also highlighted that they have been amazed at the conditions created for IDPs by the President of Azerbaijan.
Referring to that UNHCR's leadership always pays attention to the refugees and IDPs in Azerbaijan, former high commissioners Mrs. Sadako Ogata and Antonio Guterresh have visited to Azerbaijan and have familiarized with the situation of IDPs in tent camps and other areas, Deputy Prime Minister Ali Hasanov stated that relations between the Azerbaijani government and the UNHCR have been based on good grounds, these relations are developed more and he hopes that it will continue upon the return of IDPs to their homes. Stating that despite Furio de Angelis started to operate in a short time, he has been very active, Ali Hasanov expressed his gratitude for their visit to the regions, meeting with IDPs and informing to the international community about this problem and noted that, there are states that are interested in keeping this problem frozen.
If they want, this problem will be resolved soon. Today, Azerbaijani government undertook to solve the problems of IDPs. But I think that, there is a need for the international humanitarian organizations in the country until the resolution of this problem.
At the meeting, Furio de Angelis also said that they have reviewed “Maragha-150" monument in Shikharkh village and have taken the photos of the monument during their visit to Tartar region.
Deputy Prime Minister Ali Hasanov mentioned that, one of the numerous sources that prove the resettlement of Armenians in Karabakh is "Maragha-150" monument in Shikharkh village of Tartar region.
The monument was built in 1978 by Armenians on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the resettlement of Armenians from Iran Maragha to Karabakh after Turkmanchay agreement which was concluded between Tsarist Russia and Iran in 1828. At the end of the twentieth century, "Maragha-150" monument was deliberately destroyed by Armenians when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. The monument, which is the strong means for imposing Armenian guile and deception, has important political significance. He also noted that the President of Azerbaijan set mission to restore the monument as soon as possible and to show it to the people and foreign delegations visiting our country.
They also appreciated the activity of the representative office of this organization in Azerbaijan at the meeting, started talking about all these things and discussed prospective issues of cooperation.
