An event on the World Refugee Day was held in Baku on June 20.
Participants of the event held at the International Mugham Center first watched a photo exhibition about the lives of refugees and IDPs.
Opening the event, Guido Ambroso, representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Azerbaijan thanked the Government of Azerbaijan and Heydar Aliyev Foundation for their support in organization of the event.
Later the video message of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi was shown.
Ali Ahmadov, Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan said at the event that the problem of refugees and IDPs is a matter of concern in the world today. There are more than 70 million refugees and IDPs in the world. The world states and politicians should make serious efforts to solve this problem.
Rovshan Rzayev, Chairman of the State Committee for Refugees and IDPs, said that the main purpose of today`s event is to underline once again the importance of the problem. Fundamental works are being carried out in Azerbaijan on refugee and IDP problem. However, this problem creates great concern around the world.
Vusal Huseynov, the head of the State Migration Service said that the problem of refugees, IDPs is indeed a global problem and requires a serious approach. Unfortunately, this problem is rising worldwide. The political processes happening in the world have a severe impact on 70 million people.
UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Gulam Ishaqzai stated that refugee and IDP problem is a serious threat to the world. At a time when the UN is fighting against climate change and other problems, the focus should be mostly on refugees and IDPs.
Zahra Muhamadi, an Afghan refugee student studying in Azerbaijan through the “German Refugee Academic Initiative” scholarship program, spoke about conditions created for her in our country. She said that she has been living in Azerbaijan for 19 years. Speaking about her family fleeing from Afghanistan when she was 9-month-old, Zahra thanked the Azerbaijani government for the opportunity made for her and her family.
Guido Ambroso, representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Azerbaijan, rounded out the event and stated that refugees and IDPs should not be neglected. Conflicts continuing in the world increase the number of refugees and IDPs.
