On January 19, the State Committee for Refugees and IDPs held a commemoration event on the occasion of the 29th anniversary of the 20th January tragedy. Chairman of the State Committee, deputy chairmen, heads of divisions and departments, members of the "20th January Society" and students of "SABAH" group attended the event. The martyrs who died for national independence and freedom were commemorated with a minute of silence. Chairman of the State Committee Rovshan Rzayev said that on January 20, 1990, peaceful people who protested in the streets the unfair and biased policy of the USSR against the Azerbaijani people were massacred. The people standing for national liberty and independence also protested the negligent activity of the local government. The tragedy committed by Soviet government in Azerbaijan on that day was one of the cruelest crimes against humanity. Unfortunately, those who committed that tragedy have not yet received their worthy penalty. It was noted that although January 20 is remembered as tragedy, it is a symbol of the independence struggle of Azerbaijan. The Bloody January failed to break the will and determination of the Azerbaijani people for the sake of national liberty. The state-level legal and political value was given to this tragedy only after the National Leader Heydar Aliyev returned to power. The names of those who committed the crime were informed to the public, January 20 was announced as National Day of Mourning. The decree was signed by the National Leader Heydar Aliyev for marking the 10th anniversary of the tragedy. It was underlined that the President Ilham Aliyev shows special care and attention to family members and relatives of the victims of the 20th January tragedy. One-time financial aid to families of the martyrs and disabled people, provision of them with apartments is a clear example of the attention. Reconstruction of the Alley of Martyrs as a single complex was the expression of the respect by the head of state to the spirit of martyrs. The First Vice President Mrs. Mehriban Aliyeva also approaches the problems of war veterans, martyr families and disabled people with special care. Important work is being done in the direction of perpetuating the memory of January 20 martyrs, addressing the problems of families of the tragedy victims and restoring their health. The event continued with speeches. At the end, a film about the 20th January tragedy was shown.
