The State Committee for Affairs of Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons of the Republic of Azerbaijan and The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) Office in Azerbaijan have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on April 27, 2020 with the aim to provide internally displaced persons with hygienic and medical supplies and daily necessities in order to help mitigate the negative socio-economic impact of the COVID-19 outbreak. In accordance with the MoU, 300 parcels containing various medical supplies and food products will be distributed to the low-income IDPs settled in Baku, especially families of martyrs and elderly single people over the age of 65, with the financial support of the KOICA.
It was stated that the necessary care is provided for refugees and IDPs in Azerbaijan by the government. Appropriate measures are being taken to improve the housing and living conditions and strengthen social protection of the citizens from this category guided by the instructions and recommendations of the President Ilham Aliyev. The First Vice President Mrs. Mehriban Aliyeva treats addressing the social problems of IDPs in a very sensitive way.
More than 1 million of our citizens have become refugees and IDPs in their homeland as a result of the occupation of Azerbaijani territories by the Armenian armed forces. Arrival of international humanitarian organizations in Azerbaijan by the call of National Leader of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev prevented a possible humanitarian disaster.
The Korean government has implemented a number of projects for providing support to refugees and IDPs in this regard. “Rural development integrated to IDP communities in Azerbaijan with reconstruction of the underground water supply system”, “Installation of water supply and sewerage system in Khojavand settlement of Beylagan”implemented by the KOICA are of special importance among these projects. In addition, meetings and events being held with IDP communities are also a great moral support for them.
The KOICA stated at the ceremony that various activities in order to provide assistance to the IDPs will be further implemented .
